USA has difficulty with adding power to the grid, so.

Interesting Doodoo. There's an article in the WaPo that addresses this issue with specific reference to California where the excess electricity from consumers solar power systems is being dumped as the infrastructure (storage) isn't in place.

Highly dubious. Where does all the power come from to electrolyse the water? Unless the system has 100% energy efficiency, energy has to come from somewhere.

The more research the more practical it can become. And its out of the University of New South Wales what more do people want.

Interesting doodoo, but the article is more than 3 years old, I was wondering what happened in the intervening years. I looked the lead researcher up and it seems to have stalled, the process is very slow and consuming a large amount of energy. The language used in his latest reviews is quite estoric, but it seems to point to the fact that results can be obtained in a lab, but large scale production using this technique is at this time, impractical.

Barney, we disagree on many subjects, but this looks very interesting

Another renewable source - OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion). It uses the temperature gradient between oceanic deep water in the tropics and surface water to boil a fluid and pass through a turbine, generating electricity, then the gas is re-condensed using the cold deep water (a bit like a fridge works, but produces electricity). The technology has been known about for over a century, but turning it into a commercial success has proven difficult - you need thousands of metres of pipe and equipment is vulnerable to storms. There are several working plants, planned back in the 70's during the oil crisis. it was planned to build many more, but the practical problems and difficulties scaling up led to many planned plants being shelved. There was a nice little documentary on DWnews.

Another fairly recent generating method;

Some people will be overjoyed to learn that Canada's Trans Mountain Pipeline is due to open this Wednesday. It will supply Asia with more oil, and should be a financial benefit to Canada.

12 years to build 710 miles of pipe (59 miles a year)
Canada is plagued with Indian problems and environmentalists
There are still issues and licensing to be resolved prior to full operations in 2025

cant blame one man Tam. Its the civil servants who are behind every government They create all these laws that insure in the end they have jobs.

Example one man who wanted to open a restaurant in Toronto a number of years ago was stopped on the steps of City Hall and noted that he had travelled there 44 times in obtaining licenses and approvals to open

Same with trying to develop energy resources

The oil is finally flowing. What are some of the pros and cons of the Trans-Mountain Pipeline?

The pipeline is not in operation yet . Still "As of Monday afternoon, it still had six active applications for TMX left to consider"
With initial oil starting it will take just over 2 weeks for the oil to reach the west coast loading facility.

Pretty much the dirtiest source of oil in the entire world. A triumph of economic interests over the environmental responsibility. A Canadian source of shame.

Canada has other sources of crude
As for the oil sands if it is so dirty then customers should not buy but that doesnt seem to be the case

Same goes for coal from Australia.
"In a world racing to reduce pollution, Australia is a stark outlier."

"It is one of the dirtiest countries per head of population and a massive global supplier of fossil fuels. Unusually for a rich nation, it also still burns coal for most of its electricity."

And that in itself is what's wrong with the more developed nation's dictating to developing nations to "Do as I say and not as I once did that enabled me to become developed". In western democracy terms, Australia is a pretty new and vastly unexplored (unexploited?) and underpopulated land mass. It is quite unique and yet doesn't have anything that comes close to tar sands when it comes to really, really awful fossil fuel sources.

Tam, the first fossil fuel discoveries in Australia were over 60 years ago, there has been a vibrant industry and massive exploration ever since and largely not much resistance. The sixth biggest gas exporter in the world and possibly be number one soon.

It is not deepest Africa, exploration licenses all over the place. Mountains of coal as well. It is not an unknown patch of the earth.
